TEMENOS

Temenos: (Greek: τέμενος; plural: τεμένη, temenē) A piece of land marked off from common uses and dedicated to a god, such as a sanctuary, holy grove, or holy precinct. A temenos enclosed a sacred space called a hieron. It was usually surrounded by a wall, ditch, or line of stones. All things inside of the demarkated area belonged to the designated god.

Temenos is the first project for Trepanner and was funded by the Arts Council in 2025. Our objective is to create a secular immersive musical experience inspired by cave art, made in the only cave in the UK with cave art - Craswell Crags.

Creswell Crags is an enclosed limestone gorge on the border between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, England, near the villages of Creswell and Whitwell. The cliffs in the ravine contain several caves that were occupied during the last ice age, between around 43,000 and 10,000 years ago. Its caves contain the northernmost cave art in Europe and the only cave art found in the UK.

The curator has given us special permission to conduct this project.
